January 22, 2004 ( Thursday, January 22, 2004 ) Alrighty, I meant to post a few days ago but I never really got around to doing it *shrugs* So I started my practicum at Amy Woodlands yesterday and it was like a shock to the system. It was so crazy, I only sat down for 15 minutes for lunch. I don't think that the Child Care Worker whose place I'm taking, is very fond of me. She does two classrooms so all I'm doing is taking over one of them for 3 months and she like...glares at me. I've got about 6 kids that I have to constantly keep my eye on during class so that I can help them before they get behind. Today I even had to pull a couple out of class so that I could help them in the library. It's so weird, working in a school. They all call me Mr.Robison. I find that very uncomfortable. I mean, I'm closer to their age than I am to their actual teacher...it's just odd when you actually find yourself in a position where you have some authority. One of the strangest things about working there is going into the teacher's lounge at lunch and recess. I mean, it's just so awkward to be in there, after so many years of never knowing what's inside it's like....woah. They've got really comfy couches, gourmet coffee (and hot chocolate), cake, a skylight...it's like stepping into an alternate world. I guess that's the point. I was really surprised to find that the teachers really do gossip about the kids inside the staff room. I thought it was a joke I didn't really think they did that. Today was a really good day. A girl in the class gave me a card saying that I was doing a good job. It was so cute. And then later, I walked into the office to photocopy something and I saw my 6 year cousin. The look on her face at first was of shock, then she smiled and ran towards me and gave a big hug. It's amazing to know that people have that sort of reaction to seeing you. So all in all, it's a lot of fun. It's a lot of work and I'm exhausted by the time I'm done, but it is a lot of fun. |
