February 18, 2006 ( Saturday, February 18, 2006 ) I don't know if anyone else is, but I'm extremely dissapointed in this years Juno Award nominations. I mean, save for a handful of nominations, it's all crappy radio music which it really wasn't last year. I'm sorry, I don't think that Canadian Idol runner ups have the foundation of a music career to be nominated for Best Artist. It's hard to fathom someone who this time last year wasn't even a blip on the radio, nominated in a field which has had previous winners like Jann Arden, Celine Dion, Bryan Adams and more. I could maybe understand if they placed him in Best New Artist or something but I think there are far more talented artists that didn't get nominated. A part of me thinks that it's rigged. Canadian Idol is a CTV show and guess who broadcasts the Juno's? Yup, CTV. Who better to plunk into a whole bunch of catagories than previous Idol contenstants who helped to boost CTV's ratings. How sad. There are a few artists who I will root for, Jann of course, along with Tegan and Sarah, Metric, and Hot Hot Heat (who should have had more than the one nomination a peice). I'm sad to see that great artists like Sarah Slean,Sarah Harmer and Matthew Barber were completley shut out of nominations. I'm starting to see why people are turning away from award shows. Unfortunately yes, Nickleback and the Canadian Idol troup sell more albums than Metric, Tegan and Sara, and those artists combined but if the nominations were based on artistic merit, I feel that the nominations list would have looked a lot different. Is this the image that we want to give off to the rest of the world, who are looking very closely towards Canada's new music scene? Do we want to show them how highly we put our "television karaoke stars" or do we want to show that we're a hotbed of new sounds and new artists. C'mon Canada, don't turn the Junos in to the Grammy's. |
