April 10, 2006 ( Monday, April 10, 2006 ) Calgary was much fun, should be fun again when I go tomorrow too. It was nice to make a trip to Calgary that we could afford and let loose on the purse-strings a little. On friday night I went to the Sarah Harmer concert. It was amazing. It doesn't take much for me to enjoy a concert, but this one fits into one of my all-time favourites. The concert was at a downtown church. The setting, a bit strange at first, fit perfectly. The church was huge and the music managed to find it's way into every single little space in the building. You could hear her voice ringing off the stained glass windows, pews creaking in time with the music. The lighting created this simple glow on the stage which just made the atmosphere that much better. You could almost see the angels sitting on the balcony swaying along. By the time she had finished it really felt like the church was about to burst with good energy. I envisioned this release of light and magic when the doors opened, winding it's way through the city and touching everything and everyone in it's path. Her music makes me want to hug people. After the concert I was sitting on the church steps waiting for Scott, Emma, and Josh to come pick me up. That's when this east indian man approached me, not for money, but for conversation. He proceeded to give me a very passionate lecture about religion, most of which I couldn't understand, save for some hand gestures and vaguely recognizable words. He spoke for about 15 minutes while I tried my best to not looked scared and to plead with my eyes to people walking down the street. HELP! Thankfully he left and not very long after, my ride came. Whew. We stayed at the Quality Inn. Usually, we have very little luck with hotels, and most of them garner the rating "...meh..." from us. The Quality Inn was, well, Quality. The minute we walked in, the room smelled clean and new, but not like a hospital. The bed was the most comfortable bed I've ever laid on and the whole time we were there, it was pretty quiet. On Saturday we spent most of the day shopping. We bought clothes and music and it was nice to shop in stores without automatically restorting to the sale racks. Saturday evening we planned on going to the Matthew Barber concert in Canmore. Now, online the concert was supposed to start at 9. The waitress at the restaraunt/bar said that it started at 10, it didn't actually start until 11. The concert was great. I saw him play in Toronto when it was just him and his guitar and it was great, it was even better with a band. I felt a bit bad for him though because most of the people there weren't really paying much attention to the fact that he was playing. I made a point to go up and tell him after the concert that he did an awesome job and that there were people there just for the music. He told me that it's hard to play these kinds of places because you never know if people are there for the beer or the music. He seemed genuinely pleased that there were people there just for him. The concert ended at 1:00am and we made the trip home in record time. Now I get to go back to Calgary tomorrow with work to see a Flames game....better reshuffle my suitcase... |
