April 21, 2006 ( Friday, April 21, 2006 ) day one of fundraising for the bike trip has resulted in a grand total of $13.00. Yup. That's about an hours worth of riding. We had an open house at one of my jobs today and my boss said that it would be a prime opportunity to raise funds. I was aiming for $50. It's not due to a lack of effort either. I spent all of last night fashioning up a cool 3-d display with maps and a fund-o-metre, and pictures. I printed up the pledge forms and even colour coordinated my donation box to the colours of the display. I answered a lot of questions. "Why are you doing this?" "When?" "Are you crazy?" All the while trying to draw attention to the pledge forms. Not even my co-workers donated. They're the ones I've been counting on the most. The people in my "planning comitee" didn't even express intrest in donating. Urg. Tomorrow is Earth Day. I encourage all of you to partake in at least one earth-friendly activity. Walk to work, recycle your paper (or set up a recycling bin in your house if you don't have one), plant or hug a tree, etc. I just did an ecological footprint quiz and my results say that my ecological footprint is half that of the average person (4.1 global hectares vs. 8.8). The sad part is that if everyone had my score, we'd need two and a half planets...yikes! Take the quiz herehttp://www.earthday.net/Footprint/index.asp Tuesday while walking to work I saw a small animal sitting in the water near the shore of the tiny creek that runs through cranbrook. I stopped to figure out what it was but I left befor e I really knew what it was. Makes me wish I brought my camera. I first thought it was a gopher. But it didn't look like one, and I don't think gophers sit in water. Beaver? Nope, way too small. Cat? No, too...not cat like. Otter? I've never heard of a fresh water otter. (although I love that name.) Thanks to Ginn, we figured out it was a muskrat. This marks the 4th animal sighting in this exact spot in one month. I've seen ducks (who seem to have returned from last year), a deer, a skunk (speed it up joel!) and now the muskrat. Interesting. Cranbrook is a funny place to have animal encounters in. I've had run-ins with wild turkeys, elk, deer, a cougar, skunks, a bat, and now the muskrat. Usually every morning that I walk home from doing a nightshift I encounter some sort of animal. Once I actually had to walk around a deer that was just standing on the sidewalk. Ah, mother nature...evolving in so many ways.
